E-commerce major Flipkart has announced an ambitious plan to pour $2 billion into logistics infrastructure and an additional $500 million into building a nationwide warehouse network over the next four to five years. The announcement was made by co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Binny Bansal, signaling the company's aggressive push to strengthen its end-to-end supply chain capabilities across India.
The announcement came on the occasion of the inauguration of Flipkart's largest fulfilment centre in the country, located at Gundla Pochampally on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Telangana Finance Minister E Rajender officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art facility in the presence of Bansal, marking a significant milestone in the company's logistics expansion journey.
Spanning an impressive 2.2 lakh square feet with a storage capacity of 5.89 lakh cubic feet, the Hyderabad facility is Flipkart's 17th warehouse in India. The centre is designed to handle high volumes efficiently, with the capacity to ship out approximately 1.2 lakh items every single day.
Bansal emphasized that the facility was strategically built to give sellers easier access to e-commerce platforms while ensuring faster and more seamless delivery experiences for end customers.
One of the most notable features of the new fulfilment centre is its one-kilometre-long conveyor belt, which is projected to reduce motion wastage by as much as 75 percent. The facility also incorporates automated sorters that segregate shipments based on pin codes, significantly streamlining the last-mile delivery process. This level of automation reflects Flipkart's broader commitment to leveraging technology to drive operational efficiency.
As part of its expansion blueprint, Flipkart is looking at opening between 80 and 100 warehouses across the country. To fund this large-scale infrastructure build-out, Bansal indicated that the company will explore multiple avenues for raising capital, including an Initial Public Offering, investments from private investors, and funds generated from its own internal accruals.
Currently, Flipkart boasts a product catalogue of 50 million items and serves a registered user base of 45 million customers. The platform processes over 10 million daily shipments, underscoring the scale at which the company operates and the critical importance of a robust and responsive logistics network to sustain that growth.
