DP World Cochin Sets New Record Handling Over 8,000 TEUs from a Single Vessel

DP World Cochin has achieved a landmark operational milestone, successfully handling more than 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units from a single vessel call — the highest volume ever recorded at the terminal. The record was set with the arrival of MSC Ilaria, one of the largest container ships to dock at Cochin Port to date.

The achievement marks a significant leap from the terminal's previous record of over 6,000 TEUs handled during the call of MSC Aurora. The progression underscores a clear trajectory of increasing vessel sizes and growing cargo volumes moving through the facility, reflecting broader shifts in global container shipping toward ultra-large vessel deployment.

The cargo handled during the MSC Ilaria's visit spanned import, export, and transshipment operations, demonstrating the terminal's versatility and its expanding footprint in both regional and global trade networks. This breadth of activity signals that DP World Cochin is no longer simply a domestic gateway — it is evolving into a multi-dimensional node within international supply chains.

MSC Ilaria is a formidable vessel by any measure. With a total container capacity of 16,616 TEUs, an overall length of 366 metres, a beam of 51 metres, and a deadweight tonnage of 171,079 tonnes, it represents the class of ultra-large container vessels that are increasingly being deployed on major east-west and north-south trade routes. The ability of DP World Cochin to receive and efficiently process a ship of this scale is a testament to the infrastructure investments the terminal has made in recent years.

To accommodate vessels of this magnitude, DP World Cochin has pursued a comprehensive programme of infrastructure upgrades. The terminal has added new ship-to-shore cranes that allow for simultaneous, high-speed loading and unloading of large vessels. Electrified rubber-tyred gantry cranes have been installed across the yard, and overall yard capacity has been expanded to handle increased cargo throughput. Combined, these enhancements have raised the terminal's total handling capacity to approximately 1.4 million TEUs annually.

Beyond physical infrastructure, DP World Cochin has also invested heavily in energy and power systems to support uninterrupted operations.



The terminal's power infrastructure has been upgraded from a capacity of 3 MVA to 5 MVA, ensuring that peak operational demands — such as those experienced during large vessel calls — can be met without disruption. Complementing this, the complete electrification of yard cranes is supported by an in-house solar power facility, positioning the terminal as an environmentally conscious operator while simultaneously reducing operating costs over the long term.

The terminal's geographic position is another key advantage. Located along the southwestern coast of India, DP World Cochin offers direct access to major international shipping lanes with minimal route deviation. This translates into reduced transit times and lower costs for shipping lines calling at the port, making it an attractive option for carriers looking to optimise their network efficiency. The terminal also benefits from its proximity to significant cargo-generating regions, particularly Kerala and the southwestern parts of Tamil Nadu, ensuring a steady flow of both inbound and outbound trade.

Beyond its role as an international gateway, DP World Cochin also functions as a critical coastal logistics hub, providing a vital link in India's domestic cargo network. The terminal connects trade corridors stretching from Gujarat on the western coast all the way to Kolkata on the eastern seaboard, enabling seamless movement of goods across the country's coastline and positioning it as an important relay point for transshipment cargo moving between India's east and west coasts.

In a further demonstration of its commitment to trade facilitation, DP World Cochin has established Kerala's first Free Trade Warehousing Zone within the Cochin Port ecosystem. This facility is designed to support export-import trade by offering value-added services and a streamlined environment for cargo processing, providing businesses with greater flexibility and efficiency in managing their supply chains.

Commenting on the milestone, Dipin Kayyath, Chief Executive Officer of Ports and Terminals at DP World Cochin, said the successful handling of MSC Ilaria reflects the terminal's operational readiness to manage increasingly larger vessels and the growing volumes that accompany them. He also noted that the development is indicative of the growing confidence that global shipping lines are placing in the port's capabilities — a confidence that has been built through consistent investment, performance, and a forward-looking approach to port management.
