As global trade and transportation expand, the air cargo industry's environmental impact has become a critical focus. With its significant carbon footprint, the sector is increasingly turning to sustainable practices and innovations. At the forefront of this movement is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a "drop-in" fuel that can be used in existing aircraft engines without modifications, offering a practical solution for reducing aviation's carbon footprint.

Virgin Atlantic Cargo has emerged as a leader in the adoption and promotion of SAF. In an exclusive interview, Aminder Singh Bal, Regional Manager, Cargo-India, Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd., detailed the company's strategies for measuring and managing its carbon footprint, particularly with the increased flight capacity to India. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the aviation industry, oil majors, and governments to scale up SAF production. Looking forward, Mr. Bal envisions a future where the aviation industry leverages all available technologies and innovations to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Virgin Atlantic Cargo, operating within the belly capacity of Virgin Atlantic's passenger flights, is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050 through two key decarbonization levers: fleet modernization and fuel efficiency. The airline has invested billions of dollars to maintain one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets across the Atlantic and has a 15-year history of leading SAF development at scale. This commitment was highlighted in November 2023, when Virgin Atlantic operated Flight 100, the world’s first transatlantic flight by a commercial airline using 100% SAF.

In addition to SAF, Virgin Atlantic Cargo employs a variety of fuel efficiency initiatives to minimize environmental impact. These include route planning, weight reduction, and continuous waste review, all aimed at reducing fuel burn. The airline also utilizes behavioral economics and data science-based applications to provide flight crews with inflight and post-flight feedback for more efficient flying, while adhering to all standards of fuel management and safety. In 2023 alone, these efforts saved approximately 7,500 metric tons of jet fuel, equivalent to 23,700 metric tons of CO2.

Virgin Atlantic has also introduced a Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificate (SAFc) program to help freight forwarders and shippers manage their carbon emissions. Additionally, the company offers detailed customer insights into Scope 3 business travel emissions through its in-house developed cargo carbon calculator, enabling customers to take action on their carbon footprint.
The significance of Flight 100, which flew from London Heathrow to New York JFK on November 28, 2023, cannot be overstated. As the world’s first commercial transatlantic flight operating on 100% SAF, it represents a major milestone for the cargo sector. Virgin Atlantic Cargo partnered with top customers, including Kuehne + Nagel, who purchased scope 3 emissions from the flight, and Bakkafrost, which shipped 4 tons of salmon on the historic flight. The success of Flight 100 demonstrates that SAF is a viable and safe alternative to fossil fuels, compatible with current engines, airframes, and fuel infrastructure.

Beyond SAF, Virgin Atlantic Cargo is committed to broader environmental sustainability initiatives. This includes a shift to aluminum Unit Load Devices (ULDs) instead of composite materials. Aluminum not only has an indefinite lifespan, reducing landfill waste, but also enhances fuel efficiency due to its lighter weight, contributing to the company’s overall goal of reducing its carbon footprint.
