Donald Trump Tariffs Test Trust More Than Trade in India and U.S Ties. Congress accused a sharp attack on PM Modi, mocking the much-touted “special bond” between him and US President, following Donald Trump’s latest to raise tariffs on India over its continued oil imports from Russia. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh led the charge, using sarcasm and Bollywood song to connect what he called the failure of Modi’s diplomacy. Referring to the famous song “Dost dost na raha’ Ramesh said, “The Prime Minister must know this song well. “Dost dost na raha, Trump yaar hamein tera aitbaar na raha.”

Ramesh reminded the public of the high-profile events that celebrated the Modi-Trump relationaship, including the “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston and “Namaste Trump” in Ahemdabad. “They said “Abki Baar Trump Sarkar.” Our External Affair Minister was in the front row during Trump’s inauguration. We were told there was a deep personal connection. And now? We’re facing threats of increased tariffs,” he said.

Trump, in a post on his platform Truth Social, accused India of purchasing large volumes of Russian oil and allegedly reselling it for profit. He vowed to significantly raise tariffs on Indian exports if re-elected, a move that could strain economic ties. Congress has used the development to question the Modi government’s foreign policy strategy, suggesting that the touted personal diplomacy has backfired.
