Telangana, a land-locked state, is set to establish dry port facilities aimed at enhancing logistics services for its burgeoning industries. A dry port functions as an inland terminal, providing crucial rail or road connectivity to seaports and serving as a trans-shipping hub for maritime cargo. This setup allows exporters to complete all customs formalities at the dry port, leading to significant time and cost savings.
A senior official from the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) noted, “Logistics has been the backbone of industrial development. The state government is working on developing a dry port in the northern corridor, with the modalities currently being explored in a public-private partnership framework.” The government is also considering additional dry ports to boost exports, as most current shipments from Telangana pass through ports in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The concept of a major dry port in Telangana dates back to July 2021, when the K. Chandrasekhar Rao-led Bharata Rastra Samithi (BRS) government approved a proposal for a 1,400-acre multi-modal logistics park near Nalgonda, to be developed via a public-private partnership. Plans also include establishing two integrated container depots (ICDs) in Hyderabad, similar to the Concor ICD at Sanathnagar, in collaboration with the Customs department to facilitate exports.
Despite the Cabinet approving the establishment of 10 additional integrated logistics parks throughout the state, none of these initiatives, including the dry port, have progressed significantly. However, the current Congress government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy aims to expedite the dry port project.
With Telangana's strengths in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, textiles, and defense and aerospace, a robust logistics infrastructure is essential. Government data indicates that the state’s logistics sector is experiencing an annual growth rate of 12%, with upcoming industrial corridors likely to further increase demand.
