India Charts an Ambitious Course for PSU Flotilla in Foreign Operations

India is charting an ambitious course to establish a PSU flotilla for foreign operations. It is signaling its intent to strengthen its global maritime presence. Bharat Global Ltd. will feature equity participation by public sector enterprises, such as the Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation, Sagarmala Development Company, and the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI).

Bharat Container Shipping Line: Enhancing Trade Resilience

As part of this initiative, India plans to operationalize the Bharat Container Shipping Line under SCI to withstand disruptions in global trade. "This consortium will replicate the Chabahar port model at other strategic international locations. It is enhancing foreign port operations and connectivity," stated a senior official.

India's Expanding Global Maritime Presence

India's commitment to global maritime expansion is evident in its ongoing efforts. The nation already has a presence in Myanmar's Sittwe port. It is developed under the Kaladan Multi-modal Transit Transport Project. It operates Chabahar port in Iran under a 10-year bilateral agreement. India Ports Global manages both ports. It showcases how Indian PSU flotillas are expanding globally to boost trade connectivity and strategic influence.

Strengthening Trade Routes Through Bharat Global Ltd.

The Bharat Global Ltd. initiative aims to amplify PSU flotilla operations at foreign ports, providing a robust framework for securing strategic trade routes and partnerships while strengthening India's maritime dominance.

A 'PSU Flotilla' refers to a group of ships or vessels that Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) primarily operate. Government-owned companies in India own and manage these flotillas, focusing on maritime operations such as port management and shipping.

Example of a PSU Flotilla in Action

If multiple shipping companies [owned by the Indian government] collaboratively manage a combined fleet of vessels, this collective operation could be referred to as a "PSU Flotilla." This arrangement would involve the pooling of resources, expertise and infrastructure. It enables these public sector undertakings to enhance their shipping capabilities, improve efficiency and better serve the nation's maritime needs.
