Cannabis dispensaries in New York are facing a "supply crunch" as the state's fledgling legal marijuana industry navigates early challenges.
A survey by the Cannabis Association of New York (CANY), involving hundreds of dispensary owners and cultivators, revealed that 78% of dispensary owners experienced limited product shipments from suppliers over the past three months. Additionally, 53% of cultivators reported being unable to meet order requests. This shortfall is attributed to changes in growing practices, with 26% of cultivators planting less in 2024 compared to the previous year, and 13% not planting at all.
Despite these challenges, demand remains high. According to CANY members, 48% saw increased sales in the last three months, 39% reported steady sales, and only 13% experienced a decline.
“It’s clear the New York cannabis market continues to trend in the right direction, and hope is on the horizon. However, we’re also seeing concerns about supply, which, if they continue, could slow the progress we’ve seen,” said CANY president Damien Cornwell. "These issues underscore the need for the state to undertake a data-driven process that delivers licenses to the market in a way that provides for sustainable growth and a thriving market."
New York legalized recreational marijuana in 2021, with the first legal dispensary opening in December 2022. Since then, over 150 new dispensaries have emerged across the state. Business and advocacy groups like CANY have collaborated with the state to develop the necessary supply lines and infrastructure for the growing industry.
However, the rollout has been rocky. In January 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul described the process as a "disaster" and later ordered a comprehensive review of the state’s dispensary licensing program. Currently, only 32 people manage over 7,000 business applications, as reported by CBS News.
