India’s first vertical lift railway bridge, the New Pamban Bridge, is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6, 2025, coinciding with Ram Navami. The bridge, located in Tamil Nadu, will improve connectivity between Mandapam and Rameswaram.

The 2.05 km-long bridge features a central span that lifts vertically to allow ships to pass, making it a significant engineering feat. It is designed to replace the old Pamban Bridge, which has been in operation since 1914. Unlike its predecessor, the new bridge has modern signaling and remote control systems, ensuring better safety and efficiency for train movement.

The New Pamban Bridge is expected to enhance tourism and trade in the region. Rameswaram, a major pilgrimage site, attracts thousands of visitors annually, and improved rail connectivity will boost tourism. Additionally, the bridge will facilitate better transportation of goods, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s coastal trade network.

With this new development, India continues to modernize its railway infrastructure. The New Pamban Bridge is a symbol of progress, combining historical significance with modern technology to improve connectivity and economic activity in the region.
