Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has announced that 57% of Phase 1A of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, has been completed. This milestone marks significant progress in the development of this ambitious Rs 4,500 crore project, which aims to create a world-class facility celebrating India’s maritime heritage from ancient to modern times.
During a review meeting at the Mumbai Port Office, Sonowal emphasized that the NMHC is designed to be an international tourist destination, utilizing an "edutainment" approach with cutting-edge technology to engage visitors. The complex will showcase India’s rich maritime legacy through various exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs.
Phase 1A of the NMHC includes the construction of a museum building complex with five galleries, a naval gallery for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, and the development of 35 acres of surrounding land. This phase is being executed under the EPC mode at a cost of Rs 774.23 crore.
Sonowal also highlighted that the NMHC is part of the Sagarmala program and will play a crucial role in preserving and celebrating India’s maritime history. The Minister endorsed an integrated project development approach, ensuring that the complex respects regional sentiments while promoting a deeper understanding of India’s maritime legacy.
The NMHC is expected to attract international tourists and foster greater appreciation for India’s maritime heritage. Future phases of the project include additional museum galleries, a lighthouse, a 5D dome theatre, and other infrastructure in Phase 1B, followed by pavilions, theme parks, and resorts in Phase 2, with components of Phase 2 to be developed under the PPP mode.
