In a significant move to lower logistics costs and enhance environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Coal has set an ambitious target to increase the share of coal transported by rail from 64% to 75% by FY2030.
To support the anticipated coal production of 1.5 billion tonnes by FY2030, the Ministry has identified 38 critical rail projects that will be expedited in close collaboration with the Ministry of Railways. These projects are essential to improving rail connectivity, ensuring the timely supply of coal to power plants, and meeting the demands of industries across the nation.
The Ministry has developed a comprehensive strategy to accelerate the development of key logistics projects aimed at enhancing India's coal evacuation infrastructure. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of "integrated planning and synchronized time-bound implementation," which is central to the ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.
To achieve these objectives, the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Railways, state governments, and various agencies to resolve issues that could delay infrastructure projects. Additionally, all larger coal mines producing more than 2 million tonnes annually will be required to implement mechanized coal handling facilities within the next five years. This initiative aims to boost operational efficiency, ensure safer working conditions, and reduce the environmental impact of coal transportation.
Furthermore, the Ministry plans to foster multi-modal connectivity through the PM Gati Shakti initiative, ensuring coordinated efforts across various ministries for seamless coal evacuation. The focus will also be on minimizing the environmental impact of coal transport by adopting cleaner technologies and practices that align with India’s climate goals.
By accelerating infrastructure development and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the Ministry of Coal aims to position India as a global leader in sustainable coal production and logistics, paving the way for a prosperous and developed nation by 2047.
