The state finance minister, Ajit Pawar, announced a decrease in the value-added tax (VAT) on fuel prices. This led to a decrease in the price of fuel by 65 paise per litre and diesel by over Rs 2.60 per litre.

Value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the Mumbai metropolitan area will be reduced starting on July 1 by the coalition government of the Bhartiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party, ahead of the October Maharashtra Assembly elections.

The populist decision made by Finance Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in his 10th State Budget is a relief to the logistics sector because it will help lower the cost of fuel and diesel by a considerable amount, which will lower the cost of logistics as a whole.

Pawar has declared that the municipal areas of Brihanmumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai will no longer impose taxes on petrol and diesel. There has been a reduction in the tax on diesel from 24% to 21% and in the tax on petrol from 26% + 5.12 rupees per litre to 25% + 5.12 rupees per litre.

This proposal is expected to result in a fall of approximately 65 paise per litre for petrol and nearly Rs 2.60 per litre for diesel in the municipal regions of Thane, Brihanmumbai, and Navi Mumbai.

The goal of the action is to standardize the tax on the cost of diesel and petrol. The decision to decrease VAT was made in response to representations from petrol station and vehicle owners.

However, the exchequer would have to pay Rs 200 crore for the decision.

The state administration has lowered fuel price taxes for the second time. The Maharashtra government lowered taxes on diesel and petrol in 2022, which resulted in lower pricing. The Central government declared an increase in fuel prices across the country earlier this year.

To further improve the logistics sector, the state government has launched a new program called "Gaon Tithe Godam" (godown in every village). This plan will be executed to offer storage space for agricultural produce. The first phase will involve the construction of 100 new godowns as well as the repair of existing ones.

Pawar submitted the budget for fiscal year 2024-25, with a total spending plan of Rs 6,12,293 crore. This is broken down into predicted revenue receipts of Rs 4,99,463 crore and projected revenue expenditures of Rs 5,19,514 crore. The budget projects a revenue deficit of Rs 20,051 crore.lo
