Lok Sabha passes Indian Ports Bill to boost integrated port development. The Lok Sabha has passed the Indian Ports Bill 2025; a landmark legislation aimed at overhauling India’s century old port government laws and unlocking the full potential of the country’s vast coastline. The bill consolidates port-related laws to promote integrated development boost ease of doing business and ensure sustainable and efficient port operations. Responding to the debate in Parliament, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal called the Bill a “strategic intervention” to modernize India’s maritime sector in line with 21st century needs. He said India’s coastline described as the “economic backbone of a $4 trillion economy has undergone unprecedented development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

He also pointed out that the Indian Ports Act of 1908 is outdated, lacking provisions for long-term planning, modern environmental safeguards, and effective dispute resolution. In contrast, the new Bill provides a forward-looking framework for strategic, coordinated development between States and the Centre.

The Bill marks a pivotal step in India’s journey to become a global maritime leader by enhancing infrastructure, streamlining governance, and ensuring environmentally sustainable growth across its port network.
