The Liebherr RTG (Rubber-Tyred Gantry) crane has become a top choice for ports worldwide because of its advanced design and features. The crane’s electrical drive and control system, designed by Liebherr, are key to its success. One of its standout features is the eight-rope reeving system, which improves stability and reduces swaying, making it safer and more productive. The single hoist drum also makes the crane more compact, energy-efficient, and easier to maintain. With its high-quality technology and automation, Liebherr RTG cranes have become popular in ports globally.
Charlie McCarthy, Managing Director at Liebherr Container Cranes, said that sustainability and innovation have been at the heart of the RTG’s success for 25 years. He also mentioned that Liebherr is excited about future developments in container handling.
As the need for more sustainable solutions increased, Liebherr developed its first dual-powered RTG, which combined a genset (generator) with a cable reeling drum. This innovation led to the creation of fully electric RTGs. These cranes come in different types and sizes, offering greener options for ports. Recently, Liebherr introduced hybrid RTGs that use energy storage systems, reducing the need for larger gensets and cutting down on emissions while maintaining productivity. Liebherr continues to focus on sustainability to help make the port industry greener.
The Liebherr RTG has also helped improve productivity with features like automatic steering, destination control, and stack profiling. These tools have evolved to meet the needs of modern ports, and today, Liebherr offers full and semi-automatic RTGs.
