In a significant step towards sustainable port infrastructure, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, has commissioned its first two electric-powered Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHCs) at the Netaji Subhas Dock, marking a key milestone in reducing carbon emissions from port operations.
The electric MHCs, deployed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), signify SMP Kolkata’s transition from fossil fuel-powered to energy-efficient cargo handling systems. This move aligns with India’s broader push for greener logistics and cleaner maritime infrastructure.
“With this deployment, the total number of MHCs at the Kolkata Dock System has increased to six,” officials stated, highlighting the port’s expanding capabilities in container and bulk cargo handling.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce noise and air pollution at the dock, while enhancing operational efficiency reinforcing SMP Kolkata's commitment to eco-friendly port operations and innovation in green logistics.
