JSW Infrastructure Limited (JSW Infra) has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) to develop a multi-purpose port in Murbe village, Palghar district. The project, estimated to cost βΉ4,259 crore, will cater to captive, bulk, and dry bulk cargo.
The Maharashtra government's announcement details that the project will create approximately 1,500 jobs. The LoI is valid for 24 months, during which JSW Infra must meet specific conditions before MMB finalizes a 70-year concession agreement for the port.
This greenfield project aligns with JSW Infra’s growth plan for fiscal year 2030, aiming to boost its capacity from 170 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 400 MTPA. The state cabinet approved JSW Infra as the project developer during a meeting on September 30.
A detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared, which will include analyses of technical aspects and plans for rehabilitating the local fishing community, in collaboration with the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).
The port will operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) using a design, build, own, manage, and transfer (DBOOT) model. Once completed, it will facilitate the handling of various cargo types. The project will also involve a royalty structure based on per metric tonne, with periodic escalations every five years.
Strategically located near key highways, including National Highway 8 and Boisar Road, as well as significant rail corridors like the Delhi-Mumbai trunk route and the Western Freight Corridor, the new port aims to enhance logistics and trade capabilities in the region.
