Jawaharlal Nehru Port Achieves Historic 10 TEU Capacity Milestone

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Surpasses 10 TEU Capacity Milestone, Setting a Global Benchmark for Ports. India’s largest shipping facility has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing a container handling capacity of 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This achievement underscores the port's growing significance in the global logistics landscape.

A Record Year for Jawaharlal Nehru Port in 2024

In 2024, Jawaharlal Nehru Port handled 7.05 million TEUs, operating at over 90% capacity. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted this accomplishment, emphasizing its role in reducing logistics costs. The Gati Shakti plan, led by Prime Minister Modi, aims to enhance multi-modal logistics and streamline India’s supply chain.

The port, located off Mumbai's coast, meets global benchmarks. It has cemented its reputation as an efficient, innovative hub. TEU, the industry standard for measuring container volume, signifies the capacity of twenty-foot-long containers, with large vessels capable of transporting more than 18,000 TEUs in a single voyage.

Upcoming Expansion: Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal's Second Phase

The second phase of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) will be commissioned in January 2025. It will boost Jawaharlal Nehru Port’s capacity by 2.4 million TEUs. This expansion aligns with the national goal of improving efficiency and strengthening India’s position in the global logistics sector.

On Monday, Minister Sonowal launched multiple development projects at the port, collectively valued at nearly β‚Ή2,000 crores. These projects aim to bolster Jawaharlal Nehru Port’s operational capabilities and reinforce its role as a key driver of India’s economic growth.

Conclusion: A Global Benchmark in Port Efficiency

In 2022, the Union Cabinet approved a national logistics policy designed to address bottlenecks in goods movement. It will reduce logistics costs, and create a tech-enabled, unified supply chain system. This policy and advancements at Jawaharlal Nehru Port highlight India’s commitment to logistics. India aims to lead in global supply chain management.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port’s achievement of crossing the 10 TEU capacity milestone setting a global benchmark in port efficiency is a testament to India’s progress in modernizing its infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
