IndiGo, one of India's largest airlines, has unveiled plans to launch flights to seven new international destinations within the current financial year. This expansion strategy, announced by CEO Pieter Elbers on August 5, marks a significant step for the airline in strengthening its global presence and enhancing its cargo operations. Currently, IndiGo operates over 2,000 flights daily to around 120 destinations, including 33 international cities. The upcoming expansion will increase the number of international destinations to over 40, reflecting IndiGo's commitment to growing its operations beyond domestic borders.
The new routes are expected to be integrated into IndiGo's network by the end of the fiscal year on March 31, 2025. This follows the recent announcement of flights to Jaffna, showcasing the airline's continuous effort to explore new markets. With a domestic market share of nearly 61%, IndiGo's growth strategy is bolstered by an ambitious order book of around 975 aircraft, including the anticipated delivery of A321 XLR planes in 2025 and wide-body A350 aircraft in 2027.
IndiGo CarGo, the airline's dedicated cargo division, plays a crucial role in this expansion. The recent launch of freighter flights between Kolkata and Ezhou, China, signifies a strategic push into the cargo sector. Operating three times a week, these flights are expected to enhance IndiGo's cargo capacity and connectivity. Mark Sutch, Chief Commercial Officer - Cargo, highlighted Ezhou's central location in China, offering extensive reach via road feed service to multiple Chinese metros. This route is IndiGo CarGo's first dedicated freighter service to China, complementing existing passenger flights between New Delhi and Guangzhou.
IndiGo's freighter fleet, consisting of three leased Airbus A321 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft, is pivotal to its cargo strategy. These aircraft, converted through a collaboration between ST Engineering and Airbus, support a payload of up to 27 tons each. The first A321P2F began operations between Delhi and Mumbai at the end of 2022, marking the start of IndiGo CarGo's freighter services.
An interline agreement with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) further expands IndiGo's reach. This partnership grants IndiGo access to AFKLMP's extensive global network while providing the Paris-headquartered group greater access to the Indian market, facilitating smoother and more extensive cargo operations.
The international expansion and enhanced cargo operations are expected to offer several benefits for the carrier, including access to new passenger markets and resultant revenue growth. More importantly, the strategic focus on cargo operations aligns with the rising demand for air freight services, driven by the global e-commerce boom and the need for efficient supply chain solutions.
The launch of dedicated freighter flights to China positions IndiGo to capitalize on one of the world's largest manufacturing hubs, facilitating the transport of goods between India and China. This move not only strengthens IndiGo's cargo capabilities but also enhances its competitiveness in the burgeoning air cargo market. Moreover, the anticipated arrival of new aircraft, including the A321 XLR and A350, will likely enhance the airline's operational efficiency and capacity, supporting both passenger and cargo growth. The A321 XLR's extended range capabilities are particularly beneficial for opening up new long-haul routes, further expanding IndiGo's global reach.
