In a major step toward green transportation, Adani Enterprises on Saturday launched India’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck for mining logistics at the Gare Pelma III coal block in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district. Flagged off by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the truck will be used to transport coal to the state’s power plant, operated by Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited.
The hydrogen-powered truck, developed in collaboration with Indian and global energy tech partners and an auto major, features smart technology, three hydrogen tanks, and can carry up to 40 tons of cargo over a 200-kilometre range. It emits only water vapour and warm air, offering a quieter and cleaner alternative to traditional diesel trucks.
“This initiative marks Chhattisgarh’s commitment to sustainable practices and a cleaner future,” said CM Sai. Hydrogen, the cleanest and most abundant fuel, produces zero harmful emissions and matches diesel trucks in performance.
Adani Enterprises, selected through competitive bidding as the mine developer and operator, plans to phase out diesel trucks in favour of hydrogen-powered ones across its logistics operations. The company is also implementing autonomous dozer push technology, solar power, and digital solutions to create low-impact, model mining operations.
Vinay Prakash, CEO, Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, emphasized that the initiative is aligned with the group’s broader decarbonisation goals and commitment to responsible mining.
