ILA Schedules Meeting to Prepare for Potential East and Gulf Coast Port Strike

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) has announced a pivotal meeting in September to finalize its contract demands and potentially prepare for a strike at Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. According to a union release on August 5, the ILA will hold a two-day session on September 4–5 in New Jersey. During this "marathon" meeting, the union will present its proposed contract terms to the wage scale committee and strategize for a potential strike if an agreement is not reached before the current contract expires on September 30.

ILA chief negotiator Harold Daggett expressed strong support from union members, stating, "My membership is 100% behind the ILA leadership team, and they know we want to deliver the best contract for them. If that means we have to go out on strike on October 1, they are ready to ‘hit the streets’ if our demands are not met."

Negotiations between the ILA and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) were halted in June after the union discovered that an autonomous system was being used to process trucks at Alabama's Port of Mobile and other shipping hubs. The ILA argued that the use of this "auto-gate" system violated the existing agreement with USMX and decided to suspend labor talks until the issue is resolved. Since then, the union has not returned to the bargaining table.

Additionally, the ILA has notified its employer groups that it will not extend the current labor agreement, maintaining September 30 as the cutoff date for reaching a new deal. If an agreement is not finalized by then, port workers on the East and Gulf Coasts are set to strike on October 1.
