The Vizhinjam International Seaport welcomed San Fernando as its first call, signalling the start of trial operations for Kerala's massive port project and a momentous event for the country's maritime industry. Vizhinjam Port is planned to become the first semi-automated port in India, with complete commissioning anticipated by September or October of 2024, thanks to this arrival. The San Fernando sails under the Marshall Islands flag and has a capacity of 8,000 to 9,000 TEUs (20 foot equivalent units). It began its voyage to Vizhinjam in Xiamen Port, China, and is currently passing through Sri Lanka.Arriving at the port's outer area before 7 a.m., the harbour pilot expertly guided the vessel into port. The ship was welcomed with a water salute, led by the huge tug 'Ocean Prestige' and assisted by smaller Dolphin Series tugs (27, 28, and 35). Upon berthing, the 'San Fernando' began discharging around 2,000 cargo, with Vizhinjam Port handling 400. Vizhinjam's advanced technology, extensive automation, and IT systems ensure international quality services for arriving vessels. The Vizhinjam Port will be inaugurated on Friday, July 12, with Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and other dignitaries in attendance.
