The Vizhinjam International Seaport welcomed San Fernando as its first call, signalling the start of trial operations for Kerala's massive port project and a momentous event for the country's maritime industry.  Vizhinjam Port is planned to become the first semi-automated port in India, with complete commissioning anticipated by September or October of 2024, thanks to this arrival.

The San Fernando sails under the Marshall Islands flag and has a capacity of 8,000 to 9,000 TEUs (20 foot equivalent units). It began its voyage to Vizhinjam in Xiamen Port, China, and is currently passing through Sri Lanka.
Arriving at the port's outer area before 7 a.m., the harbour pilot expertly guided the vessel into port. The ship was welcomed with a water salute, led by the huge tug 'Ocean Prestige' and assisted by smaller Dolphin Series tugs (27, 28, and 35).

Upon berthing, the 'San Fernando' began discharging around 2,000 cargo, with Vizhinjam Port handling 400.

Vizhinjam's advanced technology, extensive automation, and IT systems ensure international quality services for arriving vessels. The Vizhinjam Port will be inaugurated on Friday, July 12, with Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and other dignitaries in attendance. Thousands of spectators are expected to witness this historic occasion, which marks the start of regular commercial ship services at the port.

The State Port Minister, V. N. Vasavan, emphasised the significance of this event, describing it as the start of trial operations that will last 2-3 months. The port will handle many large vessels, preparing for full-scale transshipment operations. The minister clarified that all stakeholders, including previous Ports Minister Ahammed Devarkovil and Opposition Leader VD Satheesan, will be invited to the complete launching event.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport project, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Kerala Government and Adani Group, intends to reshape India's maritime landscape.

Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd. (AVPPL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), was formed specifically for this purpose. On August 17, 2015, a concession deal was signed with the Kerala Ports Department. Construction began on December 5, 2015.

The first phase of the project, which is underway, covers the semi-automated port's beginning operations. Phases 2 and 3, scheduled for completion by 2028, will enhance the port's capabilities and position it as a key hub for international shipping.

Vizhinjam Port's strategic position and modern infrastructure make it an attractive destination for prominent shipping corporations from around the world.

Large vessels will dock at Vizhinjam to discharge their containers, which will then be transported by smaller vessels to various ports in India and internationally. This configuration will increase India's shipping capacity, lower logistical costs, and improve trade efficiency.

Vizhinjam Port's successful operation is expected to deliver considerable economic benefits to Kerala and India, including greater trade, job opportunities, and a stronger place in global maritime logistics.
