DP World is set to enhance rail capacity between two of the UK’s largest container ports with the introduction of a second weekly rail service connecting the London Gateway and Southampton logistics hubs. Starting October 1, the new mid-week service, operated by Freightliner, aims to improve supply chain resilience while significantly reducing carbon emissions by cutting over one million truck miles annually.

This expansion builds on the existing weekend service launched in 2022, which was designed to facilitate swift and reliable freight transit between the two ports. With this new addition, customers will have increased access to comprehensive storage, handling, freight forwarding, and delivery services at the London Gateway Logistics Park, the UK’s largest port-adjacent logistics facility, boasting 9.25 million sq. ft. of gross floor area.

DP World is also promoting its Modal Shift Programme, which offers financial incentives for customers to transport import-laden containers via rail to destinations within 140 miles of Southampton. This initiative has successfully increased the share of rail freight at Southampton from 21% to over 30%.

John Trenchard, Vice President – Commercial & Supply Chain at DP World UK, stated, “Launching a second rail service between London Gateway and Southampton is a logical step for DP World, offering clear benefits for our customers. Providing a cleaner and more cost-efficient way to transport cargo is a key priority for us, and modal shift has proven to be a reliable solution.”

Chris Lawrenson, Managing Director – Intermodal Logistics at Freightliner Group, added, “Freightliner is delighted to support DP World with this second weekly port train service, working together to further develop modal shift between Southampton and London Gateway. Our fleet of carbon-efficient trains provides customers with sustainable options for their international container movement.”

DP World’s offerings extend beyond its hubs at Southampton and London Gateway to include logistics, forwarding, and European transport capabilities, all integrated into the company’s global network. As businesses face increasing pressure to manage costs while ensuring reliability and speed, DP World in the UK is committed to building a unique array of assets to help customers remain competitive in a rapidly evolving trading environment.
