On August 2, logistics company Delhivery announced during an earnings call that it would offer a network of shared dark stores to e-commerce companies for rapid same-day deliveries. This initiative enables multiple companies to use the same dark stores, making it more cost-effective than operating stand-alone dark stores.
CEO Sahil Barua stated, "The idea is to allow companies to vary their costs ... I don't think it will be a significant driver of revenue for us." This move represents a notable shift for Delhivery, traditionally known for its expertise in large intercity shipments. However, with the rising demand for rapid deliveries, typically within 15-20 minutes, companies are diversifying their strategies to remain competitive.
"We already have mother warehouses for quick commerce dark stores and handle fulfillment from warehouses to dark stores. This new service will also connect the last mile," Barua explained.
The new service targets different companies than the usual quick commerce players like Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto. Instead, Delhivery's dark store network will cater to 2-4 hour deliveries, rather than the ultra-fast 15-20 minute deliveries. This offering is particularly suited for products like mobile phones and related items.
