Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has successfully conducted trials of a Linear Induction Motor (LIM)-based transportation pod, marking a significant step towards adopting advanced mobility solutions for port operations. The successful test demonstrates the potential of electromagnetic propulsion technology for efficient and automated cargo movement within port premises.

The LIM pod has been developed as part of an initiative to explore next-generation transportation systems that can improve operational efficiency, reduce maintenance requirements and support sustainable logistics. Following the successful trials, the port authority is now planning to upgrade the system to a magnetic levitation (Maglev)-based transportation solution.

According to officials, the transition from LIM technology to Maglev will enable contactless movement, lower friction losses and higher energy efficiency, making it suitable for high-frequency cargo handling in a port environment. The proposed Maglev system is expected to enhance reliability while reducing wear and tear compared to conventional transport mechanisms.

The project aligns with Deendayal Port Authority’s broader focus on technology-driven infrastructure development and innovation in port logistics. By adopting advanced transportation solutions, the port aims to strengthen its cargo handling capabilities and improve turnaround times.

The initiative also supports the government’s emphasis on indigenous development of advanced technologies and modernisation of major ports under national infrastructure programmes. Further technical evaluations and demonstrations are expected as the port authority progresses towards implementing a magnetic levitation-based transport system.
