Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a state-run enterprise, has officially commenced commercial operations at its International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) in Kochi. The first successful docking at the facility involved the vessel ‘HSC Parali,’ owned by the Union Territory of Lakshadweep Administration, marking the start of this advanced ship repair center's operations.

The ISRF, an ambitious project with an investment of Rs 970 crore, spans 42 acres on leased premises from the Cochin Port Authority at Willingdon Island, Kochi. The facility is equipped with a 6000-ton shiplift, six workstations, and approximately 1400 meters of berths, capable of handling vessels up to 130 meters in length. Notably, the ISRF can simultaneously repair six vessels at its dry workstations, significantly enhancing Cochin Shipyard’s repair capabilities.

Last October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s potential to become one of the world's top five shipbuilding and ship repair hubs within the next decade. He emphasized the government's focus on boosting the shipbuilding and repair sectors, with the recommissioning of the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant as a testament to India’s growing maritime strength.
