Vinn White has been named deputy administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. White replaces Robin Hutcheson, who resigned as FMCSA administrator in January.

Since then, interim administrator Sue Lawless, a career federal employee and the chief safety officer of the FMCSA, has held the position until a political appointee was chosen to take over.

In a statement released on Tuesday, White said, "It is an honor to take on this role and I thank Secretary Buttigieg for his trust and confidence in my ability to lead the important work of FMCSA." "Our organization is dedicated to improving roadway user safety, and I look forward to collaborating with safety partners in the commercial motor vehicle sector to accomplish this goal."

In addition, White is the acting chief artificial intelligence officer at DOT, where he is responsible for managing the creation and application of AI in accordance with administration priorities and policies.

He oversaw DOT initiatives on cutting-edge transportation technology, such as regulations pertaining to autonomous driving systems, drones, and advanced air mobility systems, before joining FMCSA. Initiating the department's Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee was another task he did.

White was the deputy assistant secretary and acting assistant secretary of transportation for policy at DOT in 2016.

White's career included work as a senior advisor to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy in addition to his federal employment.

As per the FMCSA, White collaborated extensively with the NJ Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Commission, NJ Transit, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to inform state strategies and tactics while working on transportation and mobility policy.
