LUDHIANA: Adani Logistics has successfully completed its first containerised grain rake movement for the Food Corporation of India (FCI), transporting food grains from Ludhiana in Punjab to Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The milestone represents a notable step forward in the modernisation of India’s agricultural logistics network and the strengthening of the country’s food security infrastructure.
The rake movement utilised containerised rail transport, enabling safer handling of food grains, lower transit losses and improved cargo protection against pilferage, contamination and weather-related risks. By shifting bulk grain movement into containers, the initiative brings higher operational efficiency, improved traceability and smoother integration across multimodal logistics networks.
Punjab, among India’s largest grain-producing states, plays a pivotal role in sustaining the Public Distribution System (PDS). Ensuring efficient movement of food grains from surplus-producing regions to consumption centres remains critical for maintaining food security nationwide. The Ludhiana–Ahmedabad corridor serves as an important supply route, linking key agricultural belts with high-demand markets.
The initiative is in line with the Government of India’s broader focus on logistics modernisation, multimodal connectivity and reduction of supply chain inefficiencies. Containerisation of food grain movement is expected to help:
Reduce wastage and transit-related damage
Improve operational efficiency and turnaround time
Strengthen inventory planning and real-time tracking
Lower handling risks and exposure to environmental factors
Enable sustainable and cost-efficient bulk transportation
Adani Logistics continues to expand its integrated rail and container logistics network, enhancing connectivity between agricultural production hubs, inland container depots, ports and major consumption centres. The company remains focused on developing resilient logistics infrastructure that supports farmers, protects food stocks and ensures timely delivery under India’s food security framework.
The successful execution of the first containerised grain rake for FCI is expected to pave the way for scaling similar movements across major agricultural corridors, reinforcing India’s push towards efficient, secure and future-ready agri-logistics systems.
