In a dramatic rescue operation on Friday, the Vizhinjam Port tugboat Dolphin 26 towed a stranded marine enforcement vessel named Pratheeksha to safety after engine failure in turbulent waters. This incident underscores the vital role of shipping ports and freight handling capabilities in managing emergencies and maintaining smooth maritime operations.

The enforcement vessel, carrying nine personnel including nursing staff, was assisting fishermen near Adimalathura when mechanical trouble left it adrift approximately four nautical miles off the coast for nearly an hour amid worsening sea conditions. Despite rough weather and heavy swells causing the vessel to roll, the tugboat successfully attached a tow rope and completed a challenging three-hour rescue.

This event highlights how port logistics in supply chain management goes beyond cargo handling to include emergency response and safety operations. The marine enforcement wing relies on powerful, manoeuvrable tugboats like Dolphin 26, which are essential assets for ports managing increasing volumes amid India port congestion challenges.

As Indian ports face rising congestion and operational demands, integrating smart port and supply chain technologies will be crucial for enhancing efficiency and resilience in maritime logistics. The Vizhinjam rescue exemplifies how robust port infrastructure and logistics coordination contribute to safeguarding coastal and marine operations, vital links in India’s broader international trade and supply chain network.
