Vizhinjam Port in Kerala Attracts Interest from Leading Global Shipping Companies

Recent developments at Vizhinjam port have sparked interest in the marine industry, with major shipping companies preparing for operations. This southern Indian port is becoming a key player in transshipment due to successful trials and strategic interest from large industrial players.

The San Fernando, operated by Maersk, the world's second-largest shipping corporation, arrived at Vizhinjam port for its inaugural trial run. The docking and departure of the San Fernando were significant milestones for the port, demonstrating its ability to efficiently handle huge ships. Following Maersk, the Mediterranean Shipping Corporation (MSC), the world's largest shipping corporation, has expressed interest in Vizhinjam. MSC is constructing an office in Thiruvananthapuram to supervise port operations. On Thursday, an MSC group visited Vizhinjam to present papers for approval to begin their activities.

The Adani Group, which manages Vizhinjam port, is collaborating with major maritime companies to improve its operational skills. The discussions aim to establish Vizhinjam as a top transshipment hub in the region, reducing the congestion caused by huge vessels at Colombo port, where delays sometimes last for days.

Vizhinjam port authorities have conducted several trial runs to demonstrate its potential for transshipment. Three container ships have docked and departed at Vizhinjam, and more are expected to arrive for trial runs until September. An MSC vessel is expected to further enhance the port's reputation.

The opening of Vizhinjam port is expected to transform maritime traffic in the region. Vizhinjam intends to attract worldwide marine traffic by lowering shipping time and costs, providing a reliable alternative to congested Indian Ocean ports. Vizhinjam port's strategic location and sophisticated facilities position it as a key node in the global supply chain, benefiting both Kerala's economy and the maritime industry.
