JSW Infra wins ₹740-crore Kolkata Port project; total handling capacity nears 1 million TEUs

JSW Infrastructure Ltd. announced on Monday that it has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority for a ₹740-crore port development project aimed at boosting container handling capacity at the Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata.

The project involves the reconstruction of Berth 8 and mechanization of Berth 7, and has been awarded on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The concession period for the project is 30 years.

JSW Infrastructure stated that the development aligns with its broader strategy to expand its terminal portfolio in line with the Government of India’s port privatization initiatives. The company aims to diversify its cargo mix, with a growing focus on the container segment.

“This project is a key milestone in our strategic push to strengthen container operations across both the eastern and western coasts,” the company said in a statement.

The project comes with an estimated capital expenditure of ₹740 crore and a construction timeline of two years. The company noted that it will be able to begin partial operations even during the construction phase, leveraging Kolkata's steady cargo traffic.
