India Strengthens Strategic Ties with the Maldives through Key Water Projects

In a significant diplomatic move, the Maldives has entrusted India with the development of water and sewerage projects across 28 islands, marking a crucial step in India's broader strategy of enhancing overseas infrastructure.

During his visit to the Maldives, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar met with Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and formally inaugurated India's Line of Credit (LoC)-assisted water and sewerage network project. This development is particularly notable given the recent tensions between the two nations, which had strained following controversial remarks from a Maldivian leader after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. The relationship was further complicated by President Muizzu's campaign, which leaned towards China and advocated for reduced Indian influence in the Maldives.

India's commitment to these projects is seen as part of its strategic initiative, reminiscent of China's "string of pearls" strategy, where India is also investing in key overseas ports in countries like Iran, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

During the visit, Dr. Jaishankar held comprehensive talks with Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, focusing on a broad spectrum of bilateral issues, including defense and security cooperation. In addition to these discussions, Jaishankar met with other key figures in the Maldivian government, including the Ministers of Finance, Economic Development, and Trade, as well as the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority, with the aim of strengthening trade and economic ties between the two nations.

Several significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in Male, including agreements to train an additional 1,000 Maldivian civil servants in India and to introduce the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. These steps underscore India’s support in various sectors such as social, infrastructural, and financial development.
