Each major port is developing a master plan to become a megaport by 2047.
India has set a target of increasing port handling capacity to 10,000 MTPA under Vision 2047, and all major ports are creating master plans to become mega ports by 2047, according to Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Secretary TK Ramachandran.
"The goal of Vision 2047 is to increase port handling capacity to 10,000 MTPA." The plan's contours will be outlined shortly. The secretary stated that possibilities for private participation are being worked on.
He added that all ports are developing a master plan to become mega ports by 2047. "Improving port infrastructure and facilities, reducing turnaround time, and increasing handling capacity will be the bedrock of the 2047 target," according to Ramachandran.
According to the ministry, the latest goal exceeds the targets established under the ongoing Sagarmala plan, which intends to increase port capacity by 800 MMTPA to 3,500 MMTPA by 2035.
As part of the Sagarmala scheme, more than 800 projects worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore have been identified for construction between 2015 and 2035. The Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 aims to construct global-standard ports in India.
The MIV 2030 forecasts investments in the range of Rs 1-1.25 lakh crore for capacity expansion and infrastructure development at Indian ports.
Meanwhile, Ramachandran inaugurated and laid the groundwork for many projects worth more than Rs 13 crore initiated by the Paradip Port Authority (PPA). He opened the Trauma and Burn Care (TBC) Centre in the newly constructed Annex building of Paradip Port Hospital and laid the groundwork for PPA's water treatment facility. The project has a cost of Rs 10.50 crore.
