Vizag Multipurpose Terminal, a joint venture between India Potash Ltd and J M Baxi Ports & Logistics, has signed an agreement with Hindalco Industries Ltd. to set up India’s first fully automated and eco-friendly alumina handling facility. This facility will be built at the EQ-07 berth of Visakhapatnam Port.
The new system will remove the need for manual handling of cargo and will be fully mechanized from unloading to storage to ship-loading. It will also shift the transport of alumina from trucks to trains, moving it from Hindalco’s refinery in Odisha to the port more efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way.
The facility will be able to handle 1 million tonnes of alumina every year. It is designed to operate without dust and will improve safety for workers, speed up cargo handling, and make the entire process more predictable.
This project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 7,350 metric tonnes of COβ equivalent each year. It shows Hindalco's commitment to creating smart and green logistics systems.
The partnership between Hindalco and Vizag Multipurpose Terminal supports India’s goals for better trade infrastructure and sustainability. Once completed, the new facility will boost Visakhapatnam Port’s role as a major cargo hub and strengthen Hindalco’s export network.
