Amazon Transportation Services Private Limited (Amazon India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Indian Railways to further enhance their existing collaboration for the faster and more reliable transportation of Amazon India packages using the extensive network of Indian Railways. This partnership aims to establish a hub-and-spoke model for one origin-destination pair, which will serve as a prototype for expanding similar operations across the railway network.

The MoU outlines a strategic plan covering first and last-mile logistics, transit times, cost analysis, and policy frameworks to increase parcel volumes transported via railways. Amazon India will also provide insights and recommendations to streamline the distribution network for parcel logistics through railways, ensuring faster and more consistent delivery timelines to meet the growing demands of the e-commerce sector.

Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, emphasized that the partnership aligns with the government's vision to harness the potential of Indian Railways for economic growth. He highlighted that since 2019, Amazon has successfully merged its e-commerce logistics expertise with the reliability of Indian Railways, enabling faster delivery of millions of products across the country. Singh reiterated Amazon's commitment to further innovation alongside Indian Railways to better serve customers across India.

Ravinder Goyal, Member (Operations and Business Development) of the Railway Board, praised the collaboration, noting that it will help Indian Railways better understand the logistics needs of the e-commerce sector and adapt its transport services accordingly. He encouraged the e-commerce industry to take advantage of the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport. Goyal also mentioned the various parcel services and the Virtual Aggregation Platform (VAP) launched by Indian Railways to support the adoption of rail for parcel delivery.

Amazon India began its collaboration with Indian Railways in 2019, becoming the first Indian e-commerce company to create an express transportation solution via rail. Starting with a single train on the Mumbai-Delhi route, Amazon has now expanded to over 120 trains in 2024, operating 130 intercity routes across 91 cities. This expansion represents a 15-fold increase in the movement of Amazon's parcels through railway lanes since the partnership began. In 2023, Amazon India further strengthened its association with Indian Railways by becoming the first e-commerce logistics company to leverage Dedicated Freight Corridors, which enhance the speed and efficiency of freight transport.

This collaboration not only supports the Prime Minister's vision of multimodal transportation but also contributes to the broader goal of 'Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rail,' reinforcing railways as an economical and sustainable mode of transportation.
