Adani Ports Unveils Steel Slag Road in Hazira, World's 1st In A Private Port

In a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure and circular economy practices, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has inaugurated the world’s first steel slag road within a private port, marking a global milestone in green logistics and industrial innovation.

The 1.1-kilometre road, constructed at Hazira Port in Gujarat, connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard. Unlike conventional roads, this one is built using processed steel slag aggregates, a by-product of steel manufacturing. Officials from Adani described the project as a breakthrough in reusing industrial waste to develop long-lasting, high-performance infrastructure.

Developed under Phase-II of the Bulk & General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion, the project was implemented in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and the Union Ministry of Science & Technology.

The road’s design, led by CSIR-CRRI, features a flexible pavement structure engineered to enhance load-bearing capacity, reduce construction costs, and minimize environmental impact. The project supports the Government of India’s Waste to Wealth mission, showcasing how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science & Technology), NITI Aayog; Dr N. Kalaiselvi, Director-General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR; and Dr Manoranjan Parida, Director, CSIR-CRRI and President, Indian Roads Congress. Also present were Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist and inventor of the steel slag road technology, and Anand Marathe, COO of Adani Hazira Port Ltd., along with senior scientists and dignitaries.

This is the third steel slag road built in India, but the first globally to be constructed inside a port, positioning India and Adani Ports at the forefront of sustainable port infrastructure development.

Adani officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to transform India’s logistics sector through innovative, eco-friendly, and resilient infrastructure, in alignment with national economic and environmental goals.
