Another giant stride for the maritime sector of India was taken on November 4, 2024, as Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal  inaugurated several major projects at Chennai Port and Kamarajar Port. Under the total investment of Rs. 187.33 crore, these projects are related to making trade smoother and greener, which will lead to being an important part of India's flagship global trade mission.

Exciting New Projects

It was during his visit that Minister Sonowal unveiled several new exciting initiatives that were to be used in spurring port infrastructure:

1. New EXIM Godowns: The construction of four new EXIM godowns at Chennai Port. With the investment of Rs 73.91 crore, this warehouse would provide an essential storage place for sensitive commodities like agro products and food grains, keeping them safe and clean. It falls in line with the Sagarmala scheme, building capacities of major ports for better trade.

2. Concrete Coastal Road: In addition to this, a new coastal road was inaugurated, which is 350 meters long and 12 meters wide constructed at the cost of Rs. 4 Crores. This road will be helpful in the easy movement of heavy cargo and containers to CITPL at Chennai Port. This will also reduce dust pollution with less dust pollution, which will make the whole area eco-friendly.

3. Doubling Rail Connectivity: This is the Southern Railway Connectivity project that has been operationalized at Kamarajar Port with an investment of Rs. 88.91 crore. The connection stretch is more than 2.65 kilometers. It has built three new rail bridges along with an extension to the current railway line. With this increase in rail connectivity, the port now handles a larger number of trains per day, reducing cargo movement time and thereby making it much safer as well.

4. Shore Power Facility: Kamarajar Port inaugurated the Shore Power Supply Facility for coal vessels costing Rs. 20.51 Crores. "Non-diesel" operation was possible with the shoreside power supply, thus reducing the emission and fuel usage and moving toward cleaner operations.

Focus on Sustainability

Minister Sonowal elaborated that these projects were works on improving port infrastructure and equally reflected the commitment of the government toward sustainability. He further said, "These projects demonstrate our dedication towards the strengthening of India's maritime infrastructure while focusing on sustainability." Commitment to Green Practices is critical as the world moves toward more environmentally friendly solutions.

Honouring Community Contributions

The inauguration ceremony also recognized Kamarajar Port as an excellent contributor to CSR in the year 2022–23. Further, the Minister performed the renaming ceremony of 'Clive Battery Quarters' as 'Ramanujan Quarters' under Panch Pran. This renaming is testimony to the respect that the Ministry pays towards heritage at the community level and its commitment to inclusiveness.

Towards the Future

The newly launched projects usher in a new era for Chennai and Kamarajar Ports. Indeed, they reflect the vision of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways towards a sustainable ready-to-go port system. Improvement in infrastructure and emphasis on green practices set up a real stage for India to emerge as an important maritime hub and a key player in global trade.
From this angle of view, looking ahead into the future, these developments we can be rest assured are going to do us good. Committing themselves to modernizing our ports and the connection, spells a positive outlook for the future of Indian maritime trade.
