Kerala’s Vizhinjam International Seaport, operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, marked a historic moment by receiving the MSC Turkiye, the world’s largest eco-friendly container ship.
Operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the MSC Turkiye spans 399.9 meters in length, 61.3 meters in width, and can carry an impressive 24,346 TEUs, ranking it among the biggest vessels ever built.
As a green container ship, the MSC Turkiye is engineered for sustainability. These ships typically run on cleaner fuels like LNG or biofuels, feature energy-efficient engines, and include systems like shore power, solar panels, and emission filters to significantly reduce environmental impact.
Vizhinjam is India’s only trans-shipment hub, strategically located just 10 nautical miles from key east-west shipping routes connecting Europe, the Gulf, and Asia. Its deep-draft design allows it to receive mega-ships directly, without feeder vessels.
Adani Ports hailed Vizhinjam as a “future-ready, world-class port.” In March, the port handled over 100,000 TEUs, while the broader Adani Ports network achieved a record 41.5 MMT of cargo, driven by a 19% rise in container traffic.
Despite recent stock fluctuations, Adani Ports has delivered a 350% return over 5 years, reflecting its long-term growth potential in India’s expanding maritime infrastructure and green shipping.
