Tata Electronics marked a significant milestone on August 3 with the groundbreaking ceremony (‘Bhoomi Poojan’) of its chip assembly and testing unit in Jagiroad, Assam. The event was attended by Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons’ Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, among other dignitaries.
The new facility, with an investment outlay of Rs 27,000 crore, is expected to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran extended his best wishes from Ratan Tata to the residents of Assam on this momentous occasion. He expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnav for their support in expediting the project. Chandrasekaran highlighted that this initiative will not only provide significant employment opportunities but also contribute to creating a future-ready and knowledge-based electronics value chain in India.
“Tata Group is proud to spearhead the advanced electronics ecosystem in India under the visionary leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. This innovation-driven industry will propel Assam into the global electronics supply chain ecosystem. Tata Group has strong ties with Assam, with 60,000 employees working here in various industries,” said Chandrasekaran.
In February, the Union Cabinet approved proposals for three semiconductor plants, two in Gujarat and one in Assam, at an estimated cost of Rs 1.26 lakh crore. This includes India's first semiconductor fabrication plant by Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) in Gujarat’s Dholera, with a projected cost of Rs 91,000 crore.
The Tata facility in Jagiroad, Assam, is scheduled to begin construction this year, with the first phase becoming operational by mid-2025. This development is expected to significantly boost industrialization in North-East India.
The former chairman of Tata Group, Ratan Tata, commented, “The investments being made in Assam will transform the state, particularly in complex treatment for cancer care. Today, the state government of Assam, in partnership with the Tata Group, will make Assam a major player in sophisticated semiconductors. This new development will put Assam on the global map. We wish to thank the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, for his support and vision that have made all this possible.”
