ABINGDON, UK – Leading supply chain risk and performance management specialist Achilles has released comprehensive new analysis revealing a dramatic escalation in global supply chain disruption throughout 2025. Drawing from risk intelligence covering more than 200,000 suppliers operating across over 140 countries, the data exposes a sharp acceleration in supply chain disruption risk compared with the previous year, driven predominantly by event-driven disruption alerts rather than static supplier risk ratings.
The assessment of business disruption risks and alerts incorporates both the occurrence and severity of natural hazard events—including flooding, droughts, extreme weather events, and other climate-related incidents—alongside geopolitical risks such as conflict escalation, political instability, trade restrictions, and sanctions-related constraints that directly impact supplier operations.
This acceleration in disruption risk stemmed largely from escalating geopolitical instability combined with the growing frequency and severity of natural hazard events. However, the increase was far from uniform across different risk types or geographic regions, indicating a fundamental structural shift in the nature of supply chain risk rather than merely a general increase in risk levels. This shift suggests that disruption has become less predictable, escalates more rapidly, and propagates more extensively through interconnected supplier ecosystems.
Katie Ferrier, Regional Director for Northern Europe and MEA at Achilles, provided insight into the findings: "Our data demonstrates that potential business disruption alerts rose by approximately 33% year-on-year in 2025 compared with 2024, climbing from approximately 44,000 to 59,000 alerts. What is fundamentally changing is not only the volume of disruptions, but also the severity profile, driven by geopolitical volatility, ESG controversies, sanctions exposure, and more severe natural hazard events."
Ferrier continued: "The likelihood of disruptions occurring simultaneously across multiple regions is also increasing, and in this environment, organisations need continuous visibility and early warning capabilities to stay ahead of rapidly evolving risks. By identifying emerging disruption risks earlier, Achilles supports organisations with comprehensive supply chain visibility, providing them with the monitoring infrastructure needed to strengthen resilience across complex global operating environments."
Geopolitical disruption has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sources of risk, with alerts rising by approximately 162% year-on-year. The most significant relative increases were observed in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC), where geopolitical-related alerts increased by more than sixfold compared to 2024. This dramatic rise reflects the growing impact of regional tensions, trade fragmentation, and political instability on supplier networks throughout the region.
Natural hazard-related disruptions rose by approximately 27% in 2025, reflecting increased exposure to extreme weather events such as flooding, droughts, and other climate-driven occurrences. Beyond the volume increase, alerts also showed a substantial year-on-year shift in severity profile, as defined by the external sources from which Achilles receives its alert data. Medium-severity natural hazard alerts increased by approximately 74%, while high-severity alerts increased by approximately 21%.
Meanwhile, low-severity events experienced a slight decline in frequency.
Europe and Latin America experienced the strongest relative uptick in medium- and high-severity natural hazard alerts. The APAC region showed a material shift in severity composition, alongside significant growth in geopolitical disruption. Overall, this data indicates that higher-severity disruptions are becoming not only more frequent but also more impactful, carrying direct implications for operational continuity, recovery times, and supplier resilience across the board.
Collectively, this data demonstrates that businesses are now operating in a risk environment where disruption is becoming more frequent and increasingly likely to occur simultaneously across multiple regions. This development places mounting strain on traditional risk management approaches that rely on periodic assessments. The findings reinforce the critical importance of moving beyond conventional periodic assessments towards continuous, data-driven supply chain management practices. However, implementing such an approach requires substantially greater visibility into supplier performance and credentials.
Achilles supports organisations in navigating this increasingly volatile landscape by providing continuous supply chain visibility, on-site supplier auditing, sustainability scoring, and actionable intelligence across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, compliance requirements, and operational risk. By combining global supplier coverage with live monitoring of sanctions, ESG controversies, and performance issues, Achilles enables businesses to strengthen their operational resilience and make informed strategic decisions.
As geopolitical and environmental pressures continue to intensify worldwide, the ability to identify emerging disruption risks early and understand exposure across multi-tier supplier networks is becoming critical to long-term organizational resilience. Organisations that establish earlier visibility into how risks evolve and develop are better positioned to respond quickly and effectively, limiting downstream impacts across their supply chains.
In today's complex global landscape where disruption can escalate rapidly and with little warning, Achilles's ability to translate risk intelligence into actionable insights allows businesses to meet increasingly stringent compliance requirements, engage with ethical suppliers, and adapt their strategic approach to drive continuous improvements across their supply chain operations.
