PM Modi Launches ₹18,680 Crore Connectivity Projects to Transform West Bengal's Infrastructure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated connectivity infrastructure projects valued at ₹18,680 crore in West Bengal on Saturday, emphasizing that these strategic initiatives will accelerate development across the state and the broader eastern region of India.

Speaking at a ceremony in Kolkata after inaugurating several projects and laying foundation stones for others, the prime minister declared that a transformative phase in West Bengal and eastern India's development journey was underway.

"A new chapter is being written for West Bengal and eastern India's development from Kolkata. Lives of lakhs of people will be eased and new opportunities will open up," Modi stated during his address.

The prime minister underscored that the wide-ranging projects encompassing roads, railways, and ports would significantly strengthen the logistics infrastructure of eastern India while providing critical support to business operations, trade activities, and entrepreneurial ventures across the region.

"These new projects related to roads, rail and ports are opening new vistas for Bengal's modern future," he remarked, highlighting that the enhanced connectivity would create tangible benefits for diverse stakeholder groups including farmers, traders, entrepreneurs, and students throughout the state.

Modi further emphasized that these infrastructure initiatives would provide a substantial boost to tourism and local service sectors, asserting that modern infrastructure development represents the essential foundation for building a developed and prosperous West Bengal.

Major Highway Development Initiatives

Among the flagship projects, the prime minister laid the foundation stone for five critical sections of the 231-kilometer four-lane Kharagpur-Moregram economic corridor, which forms an integral part of the broader Kharagpur-Siliguri route. This strategic corridor is projected to reduce travel distance by approximately 120 kilometers and cut travel time by nearly seven to eight hours, delivering significant time and cost savings for commercial and passenger traffic.

The ambitious economic corridor will traverse through six districts—Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad—creating seamless integration with major national highways including NH-16, NH-19, NH-14, and NH-12, according to officials familiar with the project details.

Additional road infrastructure projects inaugurated include the foundation stone for a 5.6-kilometer four-lane Dubrajpur bypass designed to ease traffic congestion, along with additional four-lane bridges over the Kangshabati and Shilabati rivers on NH-14. The prime minister also formally inaugurated completed sections of NH-19 and NH-114, projects specifically aimed at improving road safety standards, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing regional connectivity across multiple districts.

Railway Modernization and Station Upgrades

Highlighting the government's commitment to railway development, Modi emphasized that comprehensive efforts are underway to modernize India's extensive rail network and ensure that West Bengal maintains pace with national railway infrastructure advancement.

The prime minister flagged off the new Purulia-Anand Vihar Terminal Express service and inaugurated six completely redeveloped railway stations under the ambitious Amrit Station scheme. These upgraded stations include Kamakhyaguri, Anara, Tamluk, Haldia, Barabhum, and Siuri, each featuring modernized facilities and passenger amenities.

Modi also dedicated two significant railway infrastructure projects to the nation during the ceremony. These include the 16-kilometer third rail line connecting Belda and Dantan, along with an advanced automatic block signaling system installed between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli in the South Eastern Railway zone. These technical upgrades are expected to enhance operational efficiency, improve safety protocols, and increase line capacity for freight and passenger services.

Port Infrastructure Modernization

Stressing the strategic importance of ports and inland waterways for regional economic development, Modi pointed out that this crucial sector had suffered from decades of neglect in the state. However, he noted with emphasis that new comprehensive projects are now being implemented to modernize port infrastructure and enhance operational capabilities.

The prime minister inaugurated the mechanization of Berth-2 at the Haldia Dock Complex, a technological upgrade designed to significantly improve cargo handling efficiency and reduce turnaround times for vessels. He also inaugurated a comprehensive rejuvenation project at the historic Khidderpore Docks in Kolkata, which will help modernize facilities and boost the port's cargo handling capacity and overall operational efficiency.

Foundation stones were laid for several additional port infrastructure development works during the event. These include the mechanization of Berth-5 at Haldia Dock Complex, renovation of the historic Bascule Bridge in Kolkata, and the development of a modern river cruise terminal along with associated tourism facilities near the Indenture Memorial, projects that will support both commercial shipping and the growing river tourism sector.

Political Context and Timing

The announcement and inauguration of these substantial infrastructure projects comes at a politically significant time, with state assembly elections in West Bengal expected to be conducted in April. The timing of these development initiatives has not gone unnoticed by political observers, as infrastructure development and connectivity improvements represent key electoral issues in the state.
