The ongoing political unrest and uncertainty in Bangladesh have led to a surge in orders for garment manufacturers in Madhya Pradesh (MP), a key hub for large and medium-sized garment production. Bangladesh, which emerged as the second-largest importer of goods from MP in 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, has seen its garment supply chain disrupted, pushing many domestic and international retailers to shift their sourcing to India.

Shreyaskar Chaudhary, Managing Director of Pratibha Syntex, an apparel manufacturer and exporter of yarn, noted, "There is a significant increase in apparel orders as domestic retailers who previously sourced from Bangladesh are now turning to India. This shift has boosted domestic supply to major clothing brands and retailers and led to an upswing in exports to the United States and Europe."

The current situation has prompted many local garment manufacturers to enhance capacity utilization in their factories. Akhilesh Rathi, Joint President of the Federation of MP Chamber of Commerce and Industries, commented, "The supply chain impact will be felt both in India and globally. While the disruption of raw material supplies, such as cotton, polyester, viscose, yarn, and fabrics, to Bangladesh may be temporary, it could lead to a long-term shift in manufacturing to India."

Despite these opportunities, concerns remain about delayed payments and consignments stranded in Bangladesh. Severe congestion at Chittagong Port, Bangladesh's main seaport, and Benapole, its largest land port, has left containers of cotton yarn and fabric stuck for extended periods. Pranab Bhattacharya, a cotton yarn exporter, expressed his concerns, stating, "Eight of my containers are currently stranded at Chittagong Port, and payment issues are unclear. The situation is dire, and it will take time for industries to recover."

In addition to cotton yarn and fabrics, MP also exports oil meal, electric machinery, and plastic film sheets to Bangladesh. Official data shows that goods valued at Rs 1,237 crore were exported to Bangladesh from MP during April–June 2024. The 2022-23 fiscal year saw exports to Bangladesh totaling Rs 5,325 crore.

Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor of the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), highlighted that while the disruption has adversely affected cotton yarn exports from India, the garment sector stands to benefit as international buyers look to India as an alternative market. "Indian manufacturers must now focus on enhancing capacities to meet the growing demand," Mehta advised.

As Bangladesh's economy heavily relies on its textile industry, which constitutes approximately 80% of its exports, the current crisis presents a significant opportunity for Indian garment manufacturers to expand their market presence.
