L&T Precision Engineering and Systems, a subsidiary of India's largest engineering firm, Larsen & Toubro Ltd., is positioning itself to play a crucial role in the supply chain for the next U.S. space station, according to Vice President Vikas Khita. Speaking to PTI, Khita expressed optimism about the involvement of Indian companies in the upcoming project.
“Some discussions continue with NASA, and we are hopeful that Indian firms will contribute to the supply chain when the U.S. prepares for its next space station,” Khita stated.
The company is also exploring opportunities in building spaceports, space parks, and manufacturing clusters, particularly following the Indian government's decision to open the space sector to private players in 2020. Khita noted that L&T is targeting a fivefold increase in its turnover from the space economy by 2033, with significant growth anticipated in both upstream and downstream sectors.
Previously, L&T had engaged in discussions with Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, regarding the supply of orbital launch capabilities and space habitat solutions, although those negotiations encountered challenges.
L&T has been integral to various projects for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), including missions like Chandrayaan, Gaganyaan, and the Mars Orbiter. In collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), L&T is involved in producing five Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV), marking a significant step in India's rocket-building capabilities.
The company is also interested in the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) as ISRO prepares to transfer its technology to the private sector. India aims to capture nearly 8% of the global space market by 2033, with the overall market projected to reach approximately $1.8 trillion by 2035. The Indian space economy is expected to grow from its current value of about $8.4 billion to $44 billion by 2033.
