In a significant development, India and the United States have signed a pivotal defense pact aimed at addressing unexpected supply chain disruptions. The agreement was finalized during the visit of India’s Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington, DC, on Thursday.
Senior officials from both nations concluded the Security of Supplies Arrangement (SOSA) and a Memorandum of Agreement concerning the assignment of liaison officers. This agreement was signed by Dr. Vic Ramdass, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, on behalf of the US, and Samir Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisitions), representing India.
The SOSA ensures reciprocal priority support for goods and services that bolster national defense for both countries. This arrangement will allow India and the US to secure essential industrial resources from one another, thereby mitigating unanticipated supply chain disruptions and addressing national security requirements.
“This Security of Supply Arrangement marks a pivotal moment in the US-India Major Defense Partner relationship and will play a crucial role in enhancing the US-India Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI),” stated Dr. Ramdass.
The agreement further commits the US to providing India with assurances under the US Defense Priorities and Allocations System (DPAS), with program determinations by the Department of Defense (DoD) and rating authorization by the Department of Commerce (DOC).
