It has been reported that Foxconn, Apple's primary contract manufacturer, intends to extend its activities in India to encompass iPad assembly. The Taiwanese company is thinking about producing Apple's well-known tablet computers at its factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Economic Times reported encouraging initial feedback from conversations with the Indian government. With this initiative, Foxconn's current operations in India—which have up to now mostly involved the production of iPhones—would expand significantly.

Industry insiders argue that producing iPads is a logical next step for Foxconn's Indian operations because the skills needed are comparable to those needed to assemble smartphones. The growth is in line with Apple's aim, which has intensified recently, to diversify its supply chain away from China.

The Economic Times was informed by insiders that the prospective iPad assembly in India is anticipated to start in the second half of 2025. With this schedule, Foxconn is able to take advantage of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program in India for IT hardware, which includes tablets.

Foxconn has more ambitious intentions for India than just making iPads. The corporation recently declared that it would invest Rs 1,200 crore to construct a new facility on land that it owns. Additionally, it is building a massive facility close to Bengaluru, mainly to produce iPhones.

While iPad assembly appears to be happening soon, more complicated manufacturing constraints may cause the production of Mac laptops in India to take longer. In an effort to further broaden its product offering in India, Foxconn is also collaborating with Google to make Pixel phones there. Additionally, the company is looking into the prospect of producing Al servers at its Indian facilities.
