The Drugs Controller of India (DCGI) has stepped up its regulatory oversight to curb the unauthorised sale and promotion of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, aiming to ensure ethical practices across the pharmaceutical supply chain.

The growing availability of newly introduced generic variants of GLP-1-based weight loss drugs in the Indian market has triggered concerns, particularly as these medications are increasingly accessible through retail pharmacies, online platforms, wholesalers, and health clinics. Experts warn that consuming such drugs without proper medical supervision can result in serious side effects and potential health risks.

In response, the Drugs Controller General of India, in coordination with State Regulators, has initiated strict measures to address and prevent malpractices within the drug supply chain, including unauthorised distribution and misuse.

As part of these efforts, a detailed advisory has been issued to all manufacturers, strictly prohibiting misleading advertisements and any indirect promotional activities that could influence consumers or promote off-label usage.

Enforcement actions have also been intensified. Authorities conducted audits and inspections across 49 entities, including online pharmacy warehouses, pharmaceutical wholesalers, retailers, and health and weight loss clinics. These inspections spanned multiple regions nationwide and focused on identifying violations related to unauthorised sales, improper prescription practices, and misleading marketing strategies. Notices have been issued to entities found in violation.

The regulator has reiterated that patient safety remains the top priority. The misuse of weight loss medications without medical guidance can lead to severe health complications. Citizens are strongly advised to use such drugs only under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals.
