Carlsberg, a name synonymous with a refreshing beer enjoyed by many, has become a household favorite across India, mirroring its robust global presence. In a recent interview, Sanjeev Gupta, Vice President of Integrated Supply Chain at Carlsberg Group, shared insights into the strategic initiatives driving sustainable growth and operational excellence within the dynamic alcoholic beverage (alco-bev) industry. The discussion also delved into how Carlsberg navigates regulatory challenges and diverse consumer preferences to maintain its leadership position.

When asked about the key areas Carlsberg is focusing on for profitable and sustainable growth, Gupta highlighted the industry's unique regulatory environment, particularly in India, where it operates under state-specific policies. This stands in contrast to the more uniform regulations governing the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. Despite these challenges, Carlsberg's strategy is anchored on three core themes: Sustainability, Digitalization, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Carlsberg's commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles is embodied in its 'Together Towards Zero & Beyond' initiative, which aligns with its purpose of "brewing for a better today & tomorrow." The company has made significant strides in sustainability by implementing Waste Water Recovery Plants (WWRP) across most of its breweries, optimizing operations to lower carbon footprints, and piloting the use of 20 CNG vehicles for transportation in Uttar Pradesh.

Digital transformation is another critical focus area for Carlsberg India, which has clustered its efforts into market analytics and operational efficiency. Through data-driven insights, the company forecasts market trends and plans future requirements more accurately, even considering environmental factors like crises and seasonality. Automation and digital integration in breweries have further optimized resource use, streamlined production processes, and reduced waste.

Gupta also shed light on the unique challenges within the alco-bev supply chain, especially in a diverse and complex environment like India. He pointed out that unlike the FMCG industry, the alco-bev sector in India is heavily regulated by state-specific policies, leading to varied distribution channels and market routes. The regulatory landscape involves complex processes for obtaining and renewing licenses, setting product prices, and managing unique liquor labels for each state, all of which complicate inventory management and increase production costs.

Operating on a global scale, Carlsberg navigates these complexities by leveraging its Danish heritage and global expertise. The company sources the majority of its raw and packaging materials locally in India, ensuring operational efficiency and resilience. Carlsberg's risk management practices involve diversifying its supplier base, creating contingency plans, and investing in insurance. The company also emphasizes strong relationships with strategic suppliers, fostering clear communication, mutual trust, and collaboration.

By implementing the Carlsberg Excellence model, based on lean manufacturing principles, the company has optimized production processes, reduced waste, and improved efficiency. Sustainability practices are integrated into supply chain operations, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, minimizing water usage, and promoting responsible sourcing of raw materials.
Through these strategies and a commitment to continuous improvement, Carlsberg ensures that its supply chain network remains resilient and efficient, even in the face of challenges.
