Air India has entered into a significant 10-year service agreement with global technology leader Thales, covering maintenance and full lifecycle support for inflight entertainment (IFE) systems across a fleet of 57 Airbus and Boeing aircraft. The deal marks a major step in Air India's broader push to modernise its operations and deliver a consistently premium in-cabin experience for passengers.
The agreement falls under Thales' FlytCARE services framework and encompasses a wide range of support functions, including line maintenance, spares provisioning, component repairs, and end-to-end logistics management. Together, these services form a turnkey support model designed to ensure maximum system reliability and minimal downtime for Air India's IFE infrastructure. All services will be delivered directly from Thales-operated facilities located at Delhi and Mumbai airports, a strategic positioning that enables significantly faster turnaround times and reduces operational disruptions for the airline.
Beyond the existing fleet coverage, the agreement also extends to 12 new widebody aircraft that will be equipped with Thales' cutting-edge AVANT UP inflight entertainment platform. This next-generation system represents a considerable leap in passenger-facing technology, featuring 4K HDR touchscreens that deliver crystal-clear visuals, a rich and expansive content library, fast-charging capability through both USB-C and USB-A ports, and the ability to pair two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Notably, Air India is the first airline in the entire Asia-Pacific region to deploy the AVANT UP solution commercially, cementing its position as a regional pioneer in cabin technology innovation.
Jeremy Yew, Senior Vice President of Engineering and Maintenance at Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership. "Ensuring the highest levels of reliability and uptime for our inflight entertainment systems is critical to delivering a world-class experience for our guests," he said.
"Our partnership with Thales under the FlytCARE programme strengthens Air India's engineering ecosystem with faster turnaround, deeper technical support, and enhanced component availability. This collaboration directly supports our fleet modernisation and our commitment to engineering excellence."
Thales also expressed enthusiasm for the deepened relationship with the Indian carrier. Thomas Got, Vice President of Aviation Global Services at Thales, noted that the contract reflects a long-standing and evolving partnership. "Thales is grateful to Air India for their trust in awarding us a 10-year FlytCARE service contract for IFE equipment, which plays a key role in ensuring an exceptional passenger experience. We are honoured to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Air India as they transform their inflight entertainment experience," he said.
The agreement arrives at a pivotal moment for Air India, which has been undergoing one of the most ambitious transformation programmes in the history of Indian aviation. Since its privatisation and acquisition by the Tata Group, the airline has invested heavily in fleet renewal, service upgrades, and technology integration across its operations. Locking in a decade-long support contract with Thales for IFE systems reflects the airline's intent to build a more resilient and technically advanced maintenance ecosystem that can scale alongside its growing fleet.
For Thales, the deal reinforces its footprint in the Asia-Pacific aviation market and highlights the growing demand for comprehensive, integrated MRO-style service agreements that go beyond traditional transactional support models. By embedding its engineering teams at Air India's key hub airports, Thales is positioning itself as a deeply integrated operational partner rather than simply a technology vendor.
The FlytCARE contract is expected to play a direct role in reducing IFE-related technical delays, improving system availability metrics, and ultimately enhancing the passenger journey on Air India flights — outcomes that align closely with the airline's stated goal of returning to the ranks of the world's leading carriers.
