In the wake of Operation Sindoor, India’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of its procurement supply chain management process, aiming for faster contract awards, reduced procurement timelines, and quicker payments to private vendors. These reforms were discussed in a series of high-level meetings with the Finance Ministry, signaling a strong push toward efficiency and self-reliance in the defense sector.

Among the most impactful measures is the digitization and simulation of field evaluation trials, which traditionally take years. This change is intended to streamline testing and eliminate long delays in approving critical defense equipment.

Officials familiar with the discussions revealed that the MoD is working aggressively to meet procurement deadlines by the end of the year, with a particular focus on supporting the domestic defense industry especially private sector manufacturers producing key items like anti-drone technology, smart ammunition, and armored vehicles compatible with modern weapon systems.

This marks a significant shift in India’s approach to procurement supply chain and logistics, focusing on agility, interoperability, and localized production capacity.
The Ministry has also issued specific instructions to private vendors to scale up the production of vital ammunition and integrate platforms with emerging technologies such as loitering munitions and precision-guided systems.

These steps represent a broader effort to close gaps between procurement and supply chain management, making defense acquisition more responsive to modern battlefield requirements and threats.
