Promoted by a family of Kodagu coffee growers, Hangal Coffee Exporting Pvt Ltd has announced that it has adopted a solution that complies with the EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation), utilising TRST01's sustainable supply chain solution. This makes it the first company in India to reach this significant milestone in the coffee industry.
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will go into effect in January of next year, aims to ban the export of goods from deforested areas to the markets of the European Union, including coffee, cocoa, rubber, oil palm, soy, and other commodities.
According to a statement from the company, Hangal Coffee Exporting is now the first business in India to use the TRST01Chain EUDR-compliant system.
Anil Sitaraman, Executive Director of Hangal Coffee, expressed his excitement about the accomplishment by saying, "We are excited to work with TRST01 to execute this ground-breaking solution. In addition to supporting our commitment to sustainability, TRST01Chain® guarantees accountability and openness in our business practices."
Prabir Mishra, CEO of TRST01, remarked on the accomplishment, saying, "We applaud Hangal Coffee Exporters for their proactive approach to EUDR compliance." The commitment of the company's leadership to implementing an EUDR-compliant solution emphasises how data-driven technologies have the ability to revolutionise the promotion of sustainable supply chains."
An attempt has been made to limit the import of specific goods from deforested areas through the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). In order to guarantee that these goods are not sourced from deforested areas since December 31, 2020, it requires businesses that export commodities like coffee, cocoa, rubber, oil palm, soy, timer, and cattle, along with their derived products, to conduct thorough deforestation analysis, detailed risk assessment, and risk mitigation. The EUDR places a strong emphasis on the necessity of abiding by legislation pertaining to social and environmental issues that incorporate sustainability concepts. Beginning on January 1, 2025, all particular commodities—in whatever form—must adhere to these rules in order to be imported into Europe.
TRST01Chain®, which is well-known for its data-driven sustainability effect, enables organisations to easily comply with regulations while producing significant environmental benefits. This partnership is an important step in helping the world's coffee market have a sustainable future.
Industry estimates state that about 57% of India's total coffee exports are to the European Union (EU). These industries now urgently need to innovate and adapt while maintaining sustainable production practices due to the EUDR legislation. It is noteworthy that 57% of India's yearly coffee exports are valued at above $600 million (INR 5,000 crores). In India, robusta beans account for 70% of coffee production, while arabica beans make for 30%.
An industry-seasoned family of coffee growers with three generations of experience founded Hangal Coffee Exporting Private Limited (HCEP). The family, who are based in Kushal Nagar, Karnataka, is well-known for their proficiency in the growing and processing of coffee. They are currently using their vast experience to increase their export and production activities. Most of the green coffee comes from tiny farmer's cooperatives and the family's farms.
