A senior European Union Commissioner has highlighted India’s potential to strengthen Europe’s defence supply chains, given its robust manufacturing capabilities and rising global exports in the sector. During a high-level dialogue on defence cooperation, the official emphasized that the EU’s dependence on limited suppliers, especially amid geopolitical tensions, makes India a strategic partner in securing supply chains.

India’s defence industry has seen rapid growth, with increased production of indigenous military equipment such as fighter jets, submarines, and missiles. Under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Defence Export Promotion’ initiatives, India has been expanding its manufacturing base and collaborating with global firms to co-develop advanced military technology. The European Commissioner suggested that stronger defence ties with India could reduce Europe’s reliance on traditional suppliers like the US and China while fostering innovation in defence production.

India’s ability to supply critical components, including drones, ammunition, and surveillance systems, aligns with the EU’s vision of diversifying its procurement sources. The Indian government has also eased foreign direct investment (FDI) norms in the defence sector, making it an attractive hub for global partnerships.

With shared security interests and India’s growing expertise, deeper defence cooperation between India and the EU could reshape global defence supply chains.
