ISM Monthly Roundtable Returns, Tackles DEI, AI, and Supply Chain Investments

After making waves in its debut last month, the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) monthly roundtable is back, addressing key issues that continue to shape the global supply chain landscape. As supply chain dynamics evolve, so do the challenges and opportunities for companies navigating complex markets.

This month, ISM experts examined the implications of the Trump administration's stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), offered guidance on ensuring high-quality data in artificial intelligence (AI) applications, and shared insights on where companies should focus their capital investments.

Expert Panel Weighs in on DEI Amid Political Headwinds

With the current administration targeting DEI initiatives, some companies have publicly distanced themselves from such programs. However, ISM experts emphasized the business advantages of maintaining a commitment to diversity.

Paul Archiopoli, a subject matter expert, underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive workplace: "By creating a genuine culture of inclusion, companies can cultivate an environment where employees feel valued, respected, and heard. My experience shows that when employees feel included and empowered, they are significantly more engaged and productive."

Michelle Rohlwing, Manager of Product Development, Innovation, and Learning, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the global impact of DEI: "While the U.S. government may be pushing back on DEI, supply chain professionals overwhelmingly see it as the right course of action. Additionally, many companies operate on a global scale, where DEI initiatives are often key factors in supplier evaluation and selection. This creates a competitive advantage for businesses that uphold these values."

AI and Data Quality: A Key Supply Chain Focus

Artificial intelligence remains a hot topic in supply chain management, with companies investing heavily in AI-driven decision-making. The panel stressed the importance of data integrity to maximize AI effectiveness, urging organizations to prioritize robust data governance strategies.

Capital Investments: Where Should Companies Focus?

The roundtable also explored current trends in corporate spending and investment priorities. ISM experts shared insights on emerging areas where companies should allocate resources to enhance resilience and maintain a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving supply chain environment.

Bangladesh is actively developing its maritime infrastructure to enhance trade and economic opportunities. The country’s ports, including Chattogram, Mongla, and Payra, play a crucial role in South Asian trade, but strategic investments are required to maximize their potential.

One of the most promising projects is the Matarbari deep-sea port, developed with support from Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Matarbari is expected to become Bangladesh’s premier port due

to its natural depth, which can accommodate large container vessels. The project aligns with Bangladesh’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub.

Conversely, Payra Port faces significant challenges, primarily due to sedimentation, requiring costly and continuous dredging operations. This has raised concerns about its long-term viability. Meanwhile, Sonadia Port, another proposed deep-sea port, was shelved due to geopolitical concerns, particularly objections from India regarding Chinese involvement.
